Lent: Buy less live more

Lent Card

What a great idea from the Method church, as we go into Lent next month.

“To tie in with and promote ‘Buy Less Live More’ a special Lent ‘credit card’ has been produced. The idea is that people can put the cards in their wallets, perhaps covering up their real credit cards, as a reminder to ‘think before you spend’.”

Wow, this is very cool indeed!

On our side of the pond we’re just beginning to experiment with our own generosity-themed project at twoshirts.org. Having fun with it.

    Regards,
    Jason

How much did that card cost to produce? They could have used that money and given it to the poor :-)

Were you being serious or funny with this comment? We could give every penny to the poor, and it would never be enough – we need to do both. If we use the resources we have to inspire other christians it helps to promote unity within the church, but it may also pique the curiosity of people who wouldn’t describe themselves as christians, so we reach out to them as well as the poor.

    The card’s a great idea.

I think a big part of what we need to be doing as a church is letting people know that they don’t need to buy the lie that having and striving for more and more is fulfilling.

One of the segments that I do on my radio programme each week is called Simply Living where we talk about ways to discover who God created us to be rather than just consumers.

It’s not exactly the most original idea – the catchphrase of Buy Nothing Day (an Adbusters initiative) has always been “buy less, live more”. Still, ’tis good to finally see a bunch of Jesus-followers catching onto the non-materialism thing…
