I moved to a tag based archive on my site here, but have just had a new facility installed.
You can now search the archive by month/year, and also see the new guest author archive, with numbers of their posts and links to them.

Originally, for tags we were using Ultimate Tag Warrior, but as of version 2.3, Wordpress has native support for tags (which is what we’re using now).
The author and monthly archives are just straight Wordpress template tags.
