The Church and Post-modern Culture
19 Feb 2007
The Church and Post-modern Culture is a site hosted by Baker Academic, coordinated by Geoff Holsclaw, and series edited by James K.A. Smith. I was asked to post today, so you can find my piece on Baudrillard, re-posted there today.

What a great article Jason. I will let it sink in and try to connect your thoughts with my reality of (church) life. See if I can diagnose myself with one of the described type of churches…
I’ve noticed that, being a part of the same church for now 20 years, it helps to go into dialogue with those outside the whole EC scene. In our belgian context you seem to loose a kind of credibility when you hop around form church to church (looking for nostalgia or hyper-realism). So in a way your post is a warning to stay in your church and think and pray and work with the instruments and people who are their, available.

There is nothing quite like knowing who you are, without having to seek validation from external sources. In old fashioned language, seeking that kind of validation in a ‘reality’ you have created is called “idolatry.” They didn’t call the reformers “iconoclasts” for nothing…
On the other hand, humans have been creating alternate realities for centuries, commonly called storytelling. Technology has certainly made ’storytelling’ much more powerful and prolific. All the more reason to exercise discernment.
