Celtic Daily Prayer

I’ve been using the Celtic Daily Prayers from the Northumbria Community as I try to establish a rhythmn around the rest of my hetic life. I’m looking forward to some time at the Northumbria Community next year, on a retreat.
Any prayers and readings you have found helpful in your devotions?

One of my most ’spiritual’ moments was watching the tide come in over the holy island causeway. There was about 20 or so gathered to watch this. I just happened to be working in the area and popped down on the off chance I could get on the island, alas that wasn’t to be but the event in itself was deep.
Once the tide was in the crowd dispersed like they had gathered only in complete silence and/or contemplation.
It should be a very worthwhile retreat!

I have really enjoyed their online office. Since I am on sickleave and pretty depressed, it has been great to be able to use someone elses words for my devotions. I also like NT Wright trinitarian Jesusprayer.

I am planning on using this book in a class I am developing called Christianity and Ecology (hopefully to be taught at my alma mater, Fuller). I notice that the first response to Jason’s post was deeply reflective on spirituality and nature. Jason, have you reflected on how Celtic spirituality, specifically even the Northumbria book, helps to re-engage with our place in nature as Christians who are “created”? Do you get the same sense of the book being a good resource for this end as I did?

Immediately prior to seeing this posting I posted a prayer by Francis of Assissi which I have carried around with me for many a year. It is the one that begins: “Lord, Make me an instrument of your peace / Where there is hatred . . . let me sow love / Where there is injury pardon. . . It has definitely stood with me (and been prayed by me) through the most trying of circumstances.

I remember praying the morning office with you when you visited last year, Jason. I’m so pleased that you have found it useful since then.
do go up to Nether Springs for a retreat soon, it is a special place and Northumberland has become a second home to me over the last year or so (and I’m very much a southerner by birth) all a bit special.
I love the Norhumbrian office, but there has been so much more ‘behind’ it to help my pilgrimage.
keep well and encouraged

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, links, heads up, all very helpful. One of the reasons I want to go to Nether Springs is to connect and understand more the spirituality behind the office.

Not being one to *ever* manage a “quiet time” with any regularity, I’ve been exploring Ignatian spirituality lately, and contemplative prayer practises. http://www.sacredspace.ie is a good place to start – their 34 week “online retreat” is good (so far!).
