Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction, by Mark Maslin
UK – £5.99, USA – $9.95
As I have been reading around on Global warming I have found everything from the facile and shallow on both sides of the argument, and at the other extreme the technically impenetrable. As I have tried to dig deeper, this is the best book I have found to date. It presents a summary of the arguments for and against and possible responses and the politics involved. It’s small readable, and informative.

Jason – I read Al Gore’s book “Earth in the Balance” over the summer. It dates from 1992 so is in some senses out of date, but it’s comprehensive without being too technical. What I also liked about it is that Gore makes the link that I think is of vital importance, i.e. environmental issues are issues of justice and poverty. If we are going to “Make Poverty History” then a response to the environmental crisis must be part of this response. Indeed if we’re to live out Micah 6:8 then we need to include the environment in our response.

If you prefer a narrative engagement with these issues I’d recomend Michael Crichton’s book state of fear which sets some of the arguements as part of a good story – I blogged here about some of the counter arguement that he also covers for instance.
