Metaphors: windows, mirrors, paintings

Some more thoughts on metaphors.

They can act as windows, mirrors, picture.

Window: To see into and exoperience another world, new thoughts, ideas, paradigms.

Mirror: We find ourselves revealed in them, our location, place, self awareness, revelation, reflection, unmasking.

Picture: a painting, an impression, seeing something with the eyes of someone else, who made the image metahpor.

How much of scripture is image and metaphor. What happens when we apply this to reading the bible, learning, telling our stories.
in my other post prior to this I explored how the isomorphism of metaphors means that metaphors can have more reality, and substance, than if we strip mine them for propostional truths.

    Jason,
Excellent topic, and I find it serendipitous that this week featured on Integral Naked, Rabbi Marc Gafni talks about a Hebrew spiritual practice that is called, among other labels, “Biblio Drama”. This is where when one reads the biblical text, they don’t read “about” Jacob, or Joseph, but in their reading they become Jacob or Joseph, and participate in a dimension of the biblical character’s “spirit moment.” It’s a spiritual practice of taking on indigenous perspectives, and drama and metaphor are tools for doing this. It’s kind of a biblical therapy. And to some up this aperspectival practice, where we fluidly move between perspectives, and take on the perspectives of another, Rabbi Gafni says, “…to love a person is to see them with God’s eyes.”
    Great stuff!
