Drawing heavily on Brian McLaren here, is the emerging church super-protestant? (my conclusion and question not his, and you’ll need to read him to make sure I’m doing him a disservice).

Whilst there was much that was good about the protestant reformation, there are aspects of protestantism that Brian McLaren highlights(Chapter 7 of “A Generous Orthodoxy): (cont below)

  2. Systematic Theology: Ethics (1), Doctrine (2), Witness (3), by James William McClendon, Jr.

One thing I did with this month of August as sabbatical was to catch up on some reading for fun, not just books for my doctoral programme. In particular I managed to finally get hold of some books Brian McLaren recommended I get hold over 3 years ago. One problem was finding someone who could supply them.

Anyhow, these three books, by a narrative theologian, who was married to Nancey Murphy (Beyond Liberalism and Fundamentalism: How Modern and Postmodern Philosophy Set the Theological Agenda) before he died, are the most amazing overview of systematic theology. If you want one set of books that overviews the nature and process of theology, this is it.

  3. Generous Orthodoxy: Why I Am A Missional, Evangelical, Post/protestant, Liberal/conservative, Mystical/poetic, Biblical, Charismatic/contemplative, by Brian McLaren.

I’ve been sitting in 2 days of a planning meeting for the future of Emergent in rainy Chicago, which has reminded me about why I love emergent, it’s love of the church and positive motivation. I also got my hands on a copy of Brian McLaren’s new book, that amazon in the US have started delivering as of today. I think this will be Brian’s most significant and most controversial book to date. (aside from zondervan misspelling Brian’s name on the dust-jacket along with a bizarre statement about orthodoxy). For me at least this book is like a manifesto for Emergent, and what we believe and why we do what we do.

  4. Nooma

    nooma
I just got shown a DVD from https://www.nooma.com/. It’s amazing. The use of film, image and music along with a message is outstanding. The web site they have is also an example of great design using flash, that communicates.

Here is the blurb from their intro:

We can get anything we want, from anywhere in the world, whenever we want it. Any information, products, movies, music, tv, games, day or night. With a single click. That’s just how it is. Still, our lives aren’t different. Our lives aren’t any different than all generations before us. Our time is. We want spiritual direction, but it has to be real for us and available when we need it. We want a new format for getting christian perspectives. Nooma is the new format. It’s a series of short films featuring the teachings of rob bell. Compact, portable and concise. Each nooma focuses on a different issue with relevance for us, And it’s there when we need it, where we need it, as we need it.

Well here in no order, and remember from my experience, in small corner of the emerging church are the things I have learned most, and enjoyed most about the emerging church, and some experiences that make me despair the most about emerging church too.

  9. ConradGempf-thumb
Conrad Gempf’s new blog Not Quite Art, Not Quite Living is online. He taught me NT at the London School of Theology, and has been visiting my blog lately. He also gave me a reference for George Fox University for my doctorate, as he is american and could translate the UK education system into something George Fox could understand. Anyway they accepted me so thanks again Conrad.

He is a great, no an awesome NT lecturer, and more than that recommends great sci/fi books to me. He is at http://homepage.mac.com/conrad.gempf/.
