Sacred Symbols
28 Jun 2004

Well I managed to get on line in Denmark :-)
I have been here for 24 Hours. The country is beautiful, the people wonderful. I am humbled as ever, by another nations ability to speak my language.
As we have had worship in Danish, and ministry in Danish, and leaders meeting in Danish, I thought I would struggle and feel home sick but I don’t. As I reflected on how I feel, the word that came to mind was “safe”.
I feel safe, and secure. Why I asked myself? In the context of language I do not understand, what is left to me to connect are symbols. The cross, bread and wine, annointing with oil, the laying on of hands, the signs and symbols of our faith. It has helped me see even more the power of images and symbols as we seek to communicate our faith to our emerging culture.

What a beutiful and powerful experience that must be. It breaks my heart that here in our culture we ignore the symbols and fight for hours/days/months/years… about who is “right”. Maybe if we (myself very much included) spent lest time talking and more time serving each other around these shared symbols we would be more constructive. ONe of my favorite authors, Edward Farley, has a book about symbols that I have not read yet. Maybe I will pick it up and see what he has to say. In any case I am glad you posted this insight. It literally made my day.
