Well I managed to get on line in Denmark :-)I have been here for 24 Hours. The country is beautiful, the people wonderful. I am humbled as ever, by another nations ability to speak my language.
As we have had worship in Danish, and ministry in Danish, and leaders meeting in Danish, I thought I would struggle and feel home sick but I don’t. As I reflected on how I feel, the word that came to mind was “safe”.
I feel safe, and secure. Why I asked myself? In the context of language I do not understand, what is left to me to connect are symbols. The cross, bread and wine, annointing with oil, the laying on of hands, the signs and symbols of our faith. It has helped me see even more the power of images and symbols as we seek to communicate our faith to our emerging culture.

I’m off to Denmark this sunday for 6 days to speak at this conference, and really looking forward to it. They described it to me as the Danish New Wine. So I have 5 main sessions, and some seminars and all with simultaneous translation. It will be a challenge. I might get some time at the end to see Copenhagen.I don’t know what internet access I will be able to find, so maybe speak to you all in a few days.

Planting New Churches in a Postmodern Age
The wonders of the internet mean that the author of this book, was given a paper I had written, by one of his students, that had one footnote about his book in it. Ed Stetzer took the time to read my paper and drop me a line, with some feedback. I love that.
Anyhow I dug a little deeper into Ed, and he has a great web site www.newchurches.com, stuffed full of resources for church planters. Whilst I don’t come to the same conclusions Ed does, he is out there being missional. For His take on post-modernity, read this article.

The Cross in Our Context: Jesus and the Suffering World , by Douglas Hall Hall
I just submitted a reflection/essay to Len Sweet on this book that he asked for as part of my doctoral course.
————Len Sweet put me on this for my doctoral programme reading. Hall ponders what confessing Jesus as crucified means in today’s context, one that is postmodern, pluralistic, multicultural, and in some respects post-Christian. This is a digest of a previous trilogy by him, and this book lays out in brief compass the heart of Hall’s theology of the cross, contrasting it sharply with the theology of established Christianity, showing how it reframes classical Christology and soteriology, and drawing the implications for what it means to be human, for Christian ethics, and for the church.
